Unlike the botanical name, however, the term has no standardized scientific definition. Its meaning comes from the way individual suppliers use it.

That variation is important. A “Super” product from one supplier might consist of leaf chosen for its naturally higher alkaloid content. Elsewhere, the same term might describe a blend created to produce a particular concentration. Some products are also categorized by leaf color, and the designation may refer to different source material or different formulations. There is no universal specification that gives the term a single definition. 

“Super” is not a potency measurement, and the word alone cannot establish the precise alkaloid content of a particular batch of raw material. A laboratory analysis is needed to know what is actually present. This is especially relevant with kratom because alkaloid levels vary between plants and can change with growing conditions and post-harvest handling.

Why Do Some Kratom Leaves Have a Higher Alkaloid Concentration? 

A kratom leaf changes chemically as it develops. Studies of Mitragyna speciosa have found that younger leaves contain a wider range of alkaloids, while mature leaves are considered to have had more time to develop certain compounds, including mitragynine, the most abundant alkaloid. There is another reason not to treat those categories as fixed chemical types. Vein color has long been used in the kratom trade as a way of differentiating products and prescribing a specific character to their effects, but the chemistry of Mitragyna speciosa is influenced by many factors. Color is one part of the commercial vocabulary around kratom; it does not determine the entire character of the leaf.

What Happens to the Leaf After It Is Harvested?

Harvesting marks the beginning of another stage that can shape the chemistry of the finished material. Fresh kratom leaves do not simply retain a fixed alkaloid profile while they are being turned into powder. Once they leave the tree, the way they are handled starts to influence what remains in the finished product.

Withering is one part of that process. During the period between picking and drying, the leaf is still undergoing chemical changes. Research on Mitragyna speciosa has found that post-harvest treatment affects the relative abundance of its alkaloids, with different drying and handling conditions producing different chemical profiles. In one study, leaves that were withered for 12 hours before being dried at low temperature retained the highest measured mitragynine levels among the processing methods tested.

Drying itself is more than a way of removing moisture. Temperature and duration alter the conditions under which compounds in the leaf are preserved or transformed. Researchers have also found evidence that 7-hydroxymitragynine can arise through chemical changes after harvest, alongside its presence as a naturally occurring constituent of the plant. The finished powder can consequently have a different chemical profile from the fresh leaf from which it originated.

That puts the harvesting story into perspective. A mature tree and carefully selected leaf provide the starting material, but they do not determine the final chemistry on their own. The hours and conditions that follow harvest become part of the production process, and two batches beginning with comparable leaf could emerge with different alkaloid profiles if they are processed differently.
